The Best Foods for Your Joints

If you live with arthritis or some other form of joint pain, you don’t necessarily have to take medication to make you feel better. In fact, there are plenty of foods that can help your joint health and reduce the amount of pain and inflammation you may be living with.

  • Low-Fat Milk: Studies have shown that women who drink fat-free or low-fat milk have slower progressions of osteoarthritis in the knees.

  • Wine: Four to six glasses a week (not a day) can make you less likely to develop knee osteoarthritis, most likely from the antioxidants found in the beverage.

  • Virgin Olive Oil: This oil contains a compound that can lower your risk of inflammatory enzymes. Virgin olive oil works in a similar way to NSAIDs, but is generally safer.

  • Fatty Fish: Omega-3 fatty acids are great at fighting inflammation and can alleviate osteoarthritis symptoms. Salmon is recommended but there are plenty of other beneficial forms of fish.

  • Cherry Juice: Two cups of tart cherry juice can help ease osteoarthritis symptoms by reducing inflammation in the body. You can also eat cherries if you prefer that to drinking them.

  • Red Peppers: These veggies contain plenty of vitamin C which helps your body to produce collagen. That collagen is a part of ligaments, tendons, and cartilage and helps cushion your joints.

  • Oatmeal: Oatmeal contains plenty of whole grains which lower levels of inflammation. Avoid white grains because they actually have the opposite effect. Oatmeal with fruits and nuts mixed in makes a great healthy breakfast or snack.

  • Turmeric: This staple in Indian food is lots of curcumin which works as a pain reliever and eases aches and pains in the knees. It can often be found sold with other spices at your local supermarket or health shop.
